The Churnet Valley Railway has long been one of my favourite local attractions, and this week as part of my Year of Reasons to Visit the Moorlands campaign, I am delighted to be focusing on it at a really special time - when it transforms into The Polar Express.
The team of dedicated volunteers at the Churnet Valley Railway expertly restore steam engines to their former glory and run services throughout the year. But on dates throughout November and December you can take The Polar Express and join a marvellous cast of characters including the singing Chefs, the Hobo and the Conductor - who sing all the way as they take you on a magical journey to the ‘North Pole’.
Departing from Froghall station, the journey takes around 1 hour and everyone is encouraged to really get into the spirit of the evening by attending in their pyjamas. You are served hot chocolate and a cookie and after passing though the Northern Lights, Father Christmas will be sure to meet you, ready to hand out presents to all the children on board.
The Churnet Valley Railway was one of my favourite activities to do with my children when they were younger. It has also always been a great day out to share with visitors over the years. The Polar Express is such a lovely way to get into the Christmas spirit. I really would recommend it as a great way to spend a day over the festive period – it’s a great Reason to Visit the Moorlands!
I will be posting pictures of the Churnet Valley Railway throughout the week on my social media pages and encourage anyone who has memories of the Churnet Valley Railway and The Polar Express to share them on my Year of Reasons Twitter/X @VisitMoorlands.
