Following an outbreak of positive Covid cases in Leek, identified in students and staff at some of our schools and also in a couple of hospitality venues, I spoke to the SRO and the Clinical Lead for the local vaccination and testing programme and also with the schools involved earlier today.
It has now been confirmed that several positive Covid cases linked to an outbreak across three Leek schools are the Variant of Concern (VOC) first identified in India.
To date, we have had more than 30 positive cases across Westwood College, St Edward’s Middle School and Leek High School and 19 have this afternoon been confirmed as VOC, with more expected to be confirmed.
Staffordshire County Council are asking anyone with links to ALL schools in Leek to get a PCR test and are putting in extra testing capacity in the town. Testing began at St Edward’s today and will continue there and at Leek High School in the coming days. People can book or just walk up.

The national mobile testing unit is in Leek from tomorrow and this can be booked through the national www.nhs.uk/coronavirus People need to select the option “my council has asked me to book a test.”
