Moorlands MP, Karen Bradley, is co-chair of the All-Party Parliamentary group for Human Trafficking and Modern Slavery together with Baroness Butler-Sloss and earlier today hosted a panel event to discuss labour exploitation in the UK and Section 54 of the Modern Slavery Act.
Following reports of labour exploitation in textile factories in Leicester, the panel discussion focused on the wider implementation of S54 to prevent modern slavery in supply chains.
Panellists included Dame Sara Thornton (the Independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner), Prof Vernon Coaker, representatives from the US, Daniel Scully from the Gangmasters and Labour Abuse Authority and Peter Andrews from the British Retail Consortium.
Karen commented,
“I was really pleased to be able to bring together this expert panel today to discuss labour exploitation in the UK and the implementation of Section 54 of the Modern Slavery Act 2015. Thank you to all the speakers for their excellent presentations – it was a really useful and informative discussion.”
One of Karen’s previous roles was the Minister for Modern Slavery and Organised Crime in the Home Office where she brought in the Serious Crime Act to help protect people in the UK from organised crime. Just before Parliament was dissolved in March 2015 she secured the passing of the Modern Slavery Act which is a landmark piece of legislation that protects people from the evil of slavery today.
