I popped into the Excellence in Public Health awards in Westminster yesterday where our very own Mark Williams, GP at Leek Health Centre and Clinical Commissioner at North Staffordshire, was celebrating his nomination as a public health hero. The awards were set up by Jane Ellison MP, Minister for Public Health, to celebrate the unsung heroes who are leading local initiatives which are improving the nation's health and wellbeing.
I nominated Mark because I believe he is a perfect example of a healthcare worker who goes above and beyond.
In the area of urgent care, he has made huge improvements in North Staffordshire. He is also a tireless campaigner for improved mental health provision, and is in the process of setting up a mental health Multi-Speciality Community Provider in Leek. He has developed a blueprint for change and has already piloted the scheme working closely with an elderly care Community Psychiatric Nurse (CPN) to improve patient, community and clinical engagement and reduce bureaucracy. The response from staff and patients has been overwhelmingly positive and other areas now want to copy what he is doing. Mark is an inspirational young doctor changing the fact of mental health in Staffordshire Moorlands. Thank you for all your hard work Mark!
