Many of you have been in touch recently about support for those who have been forced to flee their homes because of the conflict in Ukraine.
I share your concerns. This is a premeditated and wholly unprovoked attack on a sovereign democratic state and my thoughts are with the Ukrainian people and their President, whose defiance, courage and patriotism in the face of foreign aggression is inspiring.
I am glad that the UK and our allies have been united in imposing strict sanctions on Russia and particularly senior members of Putin’s regime.
There is also much that we are doing to provide humanitarian support and I know that many local organisations have organised donations and supplies.
UK individuals, charities, community groups and businesses can also now record their interest in supporting Ukrainians fleeing the war through the government’s new Homes for Ukraine scheme. The webpage for sponsors to record their interest is now open and can be found here:
https://homesforukraine.campaign.gov.uk/
The Government has drawn up emergency regulations so those arriving can access Universal Credit and support from Work Coaches to find jobs from day one. They are also providing translation services and face-to-face assistance to those who need it.
This will allow those fleeing the unimaginable horrors in Ukraine to rapidly get the support and help they need and move forward with their lives immediately.
And finally, many of you have been in touch about former Leek teacher Harry Richardson. My team and I along with, I know, many organisations, SMDC council, local people and the press have been doing everything possible to bring him and his family back to the UK. I realise it has taken longer than we hoped but I am delighted that the family are now safely back in the Moorlands.
